Initial EV Developments Automotive production is VERY expensive running into many millions (including costly crash + safety tests etc, etc, money a very small business just wouldn't have!), so after careful thought I'm going to begin by firstly MODIFYING a small existing marine craft - easier and cheaper than the complicated process of trying to make a totally new product, and once this has been done it can be easily demonstrated, tested, modified (if required) until everything is right. Then a totally new design of craft can always be built from the tried and tested original design. The initial modified electric marine craft is to be named: eCo electric Craft odyssey I purchased and are to modify this popular and actually quite well known GP14 type of sailing dinghy
It will be used for installation and testing of the turbine generator EV system in a marine environment - and also a radical solar sail system design Watch for further updates regarding this boat! But why a sailboat you might be asking? Surely a powerboat would be a better option, for an electric craft. For those who have seen Ridley Scott's Alien Covenant (and for those who maybe haven't) - there's a highly charged shockwave from a nearby stellar ignition that damages the solar sails used on the spaceship. It's science fiction, but certainly a visionary view of a possible power generation technique.
Of course thankfully I'm not designing anything that relates to space, my craft would only go into water! - BUT having such a amazing way to generate not only forward thrust (as with all sailing boats), I'm convinced that the sail can do so much more, and yes hope to indeed develop the idea into a radical way to recharge batteries while at sea. While a powerboat is perhaps more 'fun' than a sailing boat, it is certainly advantageous to explore the sail in relation to a possible source of power generation.
At least there won't be any highly charged shockwaves from a nearby stellar ignition to cause concern, but certainly the ocean can have its own shockwaves, literally, that any sail would have to be designed to cope with.
Who knows if such a design can actually be made, but I'm in the business of pioneering radical new technology! Already flexible solar panels are available, so why not..... a solar sail?
If I can develop or even design a lightweight sail that operates exactly like a regular one does, but can also generate free electrical energy from the sun (basically a large but flexible solar panel), then my craft would be an amazing 3x technological advancement - using either wind propulsion when available, electrical propulsion by using the turbine generator system, AND also in addition, solar recharging! A real hybrid ** UPDATE ** Already the solar sail concept is beginning to take shape with ideas and development concepts for various styles of solar powered marine craft. Certainly this is all at the forefront of a whole new technology - although these yachts appear to have just sail/solar panels - with no actual electrical propulsion system? How they are designed remains to be seen, but of course IF they decide to use a large battery bank (recharged by the solar sails) AND a traction motor which actually powers the propeller - oh no! Well that's the same BAD SYSTEM which EV cars are using! Because once again... these rules apply: Connecting a battery directly to the traction motor results in very high current discharges As a single battery pack is fitted, if it's heavily discharged the capacity quickly drops The yacht having only solar panels will be able to generate power but possibly not enough for any real propulsion so it's likely to have lots of initial power from batteries to begin with, however on a full cruise around these batteries will lose power from running a traction motor and possibly won't be able to be recharged suitably from the solar sails. Of course 'free' wind would greatly also help move the yacht along, but my system benefits from x3 power options - sail - powered electrical propulsion AND solar recharging of the spare battery set which is available for instant use. Once again my EV system is on the top line - By using the turbine generator and not just one but separate battery systems, this totally new and pioneering step ensures a reliable backup power source for my unique EV system and avoids range anxiety as an onboard power source is available if required, VITAL as there's certainly even more limited yacht charging infrastructures available (than for cars!) - and since 'running out of power' is still the main issue for (most) EV car drivers who want to switch over to a pure electric system, but are concerned about getting stranded if (or when) the battery gets low, or worse runs out - that would be far WORSE on a yacht in the open seas, if suddenly stranded without any power! My system as mentioned not only avoids the anxiety of running out of power (due to a backup battery set already onboard), but it also ensures a greater cruising distance with the powerful turbine generator unit preventing the batteries from being drained, unlike the direct battery to motor system currently used - but also the fully recharged set of batteries is always ready to take the yacht to a safe port or place if a charge is needed in an emergency. Which vessel would you rather be sailing on?! |
